Leila Fowler’s 12-year-old brother found her on Saturday evening, and her attacker fled the scene after stabbing the 8-year-old girl to death according to a report by the Associated Press.
Officials say investigators have collected fingerprints and DNA and have been searching for the 6-foot-tall assailant who still remains unidentified. Authorities conducted door-to-door searches over the weekend and on Monday bus stops and schools were guarded by deputies.
“This is way too close to home,” Julia Poland, who took her 13-year-old daughter to an afternoon news conference on the search, told the Modesto Bee. “This kind of thing does not happen here.”
